The US House of Representatives narrowly approved a $70 billion immigration enforcement package, ending a four-month lapse in funding and handing a significant victory to Speaker Mike Johnson.
A 214-212 vote
The bill passed 214-212, with every Republican present voting in favour and all Democrats opposed. Given the GOP's fragile majority, Johnson could spare only a handful of defections. The measure funds Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) through fiscal year 2029 — effectively through the end of Trump's term.
Next stop: the President's desk
The Senate-passed legislation now goes to President Trump to sign into law. Supporters say it secures border operations for years; opponents argue the scale of enforcement funding is excessive. The vote caps weeks of Republican delays and Senate wrangling.
