Rivian Begins R2 Deliveries, Targeting the Model Y

Rivian has begun delivering its R2 electric SUV, moving the long-anticipated model from preorder lists to customer driveways and squaring it directly against the Tesla Model Y.

What the R2 Offers

The R2 launches with up to 330 miles of EPA-estimated range and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain producing 656 horsepower. Rivian quotes a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.6 seconds. Customers placing orders are reportedly seeing estimated delivery windows of roughly two to six weeks, a notably short turnaround for a newly launched vehicle.

Going Head to Head With Tesla

On a standard 21-inch all-season setup, the R2 Performance and Model Y Performance come out nearly identical on efficiency. The R2 actually edges out about 24 additional miles of range thanks to its larger 86.8 kWh battery compared with the Model Y's 84 kWh pack. That parity is striking given the R2 Performance weighs roughly 5,250 pounds, nearly 800 pounds more than the Model Y.

  • Up to 330 miles of EPA-estimated range
  • 656 horsepower from a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup

  • 86.8 kWh battery, larger than the Model Y's 84 kWh pack
  • Estimated delivery times of two to six weeks

Updates Across the Lineup

Alongside the R2, Rivian is refreshing its larger vehicles. The 2026 R1T and R1S are being offered with a returning quad-motor drivetrain that places an electric motor at each wheel. In the R1S Quad configuration, that produces 1,025 horsepower and nearly 1,200 lb-ft of torque, enough for a claimed 2.5-second sprint to 60 mph.

Charging Access Expands

Rivian vehicles now have access to more than 50,000 chargers, a network that includes Tesla Superchargers. Broad charging access has become a competitive necessity for electric vehicle makers, and the addition of Supercharger compatibility removes a longstanding friction point for road trips.

A Pivotal Moment for Rivian

The R2 represents Rivian's push toward higher production volumes and a more accessible price point than its flagship R1 vehicles. With deliveries underway and wait times short, the company is positioned to test whether it can convert strong interest into sustained sales against the best-selling electric SUV on the market.
