The Chairman Named No. 1 on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2026

Hong Kong's The Chairman has claimed the top spot on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2026, rising from second place a year earlier. The ranking was revealed at a ceremony at the Kerry Hotel in Hong Kong, crowning chef Danny Yip's inventive Cantonese restaurant as the region's best.

A win for Cantonese cooking

The Chairman has long been celebrated for a modern take on Cantonese cuisine that leans on local, seasonal sourcing and restrained technique rather than luxury imports. Its signature steamed crab with aged Shaoxing wine and flat rice noodles has become one of the most photographed dishes in Asian fine dining, but Yip's kitchen is prized for consistency across the whole menu.

How the map looked

The 2026 list underscored just how concentrated Asia's top-tier dining has become in a handful of cities.

  • Bangkok led all cities with 14 entries
  • Seoul followed closely with 13
  • Tokyo and Hong Kong each placed 10 restaurants
  • The top 10 was almost entirely returning names

Danny Yip's philosophy

Yip has built The Chairman around the idea that great Cantonese food starts with ingredients and producer relationships, not spectacle. That ethos, once considered quietly unfashionable next to flashier tasting menus, now reads as ahead of its time as diners gravitate toward sourcing and seasonality.

What the ranking means

Reaching No. 1 cements Hong Kong's standing as a culinary capital at a moment when Bangkok and Seoul are surging. It also validates a homegrown cuisine competing on its own terms rather than mimicking European fine-dining conventions.

The 50 Best rankings carry real commercial weight, driving reservations and international travel toward the winners. For The Chairman, the promotion turns a long-admired institution into a must-visit for the global dining set, and puts Cantonese cooking back at the center of the conversation about Asia's most important restaurants.
