US and Iran agree to extend ceasefire by 60 days in Pakistan-brokered deal

The United States and Iran have agreed to a framework extending their ceasefire for 60 days, opening a window for negotiations aimed at permanently ending the war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Pakistan's role

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the framework, saying "both sides have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon." A formal signing ceremony is expected on Friday in Switzerland.

Nuclear talks ahead

During the 60-day window, the US and Iran are to negotiate over Iran's nuclear enrichment and the disposal of its highly enriched uranium. Trump said on Truth Social that the opening of the strait would take place only upon the signing of the deal, for the purposes of mine removal.

The agreement could ease pressure on global energy markets while talks continue.
